Hutchins Academy Student Named Finalist For Prestigious Telluride Summer Program

CHATTANOOGA, TN - Hutchins Academy continues its tradition of academic excellence as junior Kai Ryals has been named a finalist for the highly selective Telluride Association Summer Seminar (TASS). The announcement comes on the heels of the Academy's seniors securing over $400,000 in scholarships in less than two weeks.

Ryals, who aspires to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, is among an elite group of high school students nationwide selected as finalists for the fully-funded, five-week scholarly program. If selected, Ryals will attend either Cornell University or the University of Maryland from June 22 to July 26, 2025, engaging in college-level seminars and participating in a democratic living-learning community.

"While our recent scholarship achievements are remarkable, they're simply stepping stones to greater heights," says Marie Mott, founder of Hutchins Academy. "My vision isn't just about celebrating current successes. We continue to raise the bar. When our sophomores and juniors, like Kai, compete for opportunities at prestigious institutions, they're not just representing themselves; they're setting new standards for what's possible at Hutchins Academy."

The Telluride Association Summer Seminar, known for its rigorous academic programming and focus on critical thinking, aligns perfectly with Hutchins Academy's mission of preparing students for excellence in higher education. TASS participants engage in intensive coursework, community service, and democratic decision-making processes while receiving mentorship from distinguished faculty members.

Mott's strategic approach to college preparation includes connecting students with transformative educational experiences at top-tier institutions. Her mentorship program has proven particularly successful in guiding students toward competitive opportunities that combine academic rigor with meaningful community engagement.

Final decisions for TASS participants will be announced on March 26, 2025.
